Vanessa Noel’s Story Is Proof That Women’s Heart Attack Symptoms Often Overlooked

It took four months for fashion designer and hotelier Vanessa Noel to convince her doctors that she had heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women — and one of the most preventable. Still, many physicians never talk to them about coronary risk and sometimes don’t even recognize the symptoms, mistaking them instead for signs of panic disorder, stress, and even hypochondria. We hope that through Vanessa’s story, we can raise awareness about medicine’s gender bias.
