Jaundice, also known as icterus, is a term used to describe a yellowish tinge to the skin and sclerae (the white part of the eye) that is caused by an excess of bilirubin in the blood (hyperbilirubinemia).
Bilirubin (bil-ih-ROO-bin) is a yellow-colored substance that is responsible for the yellowing of the skin and sclerae in jaundice.
Bilirubin is a waste product that remains in the bloodstream after iron is removed from hemoglobin in red blood cells. When there is an excess of bilirubin, it can leak out into surrounding tissues, saturating them with this yellow substance
The color of the skin and sclerae varies depending on levels of bilirubin; mildly elevated levels display yellow skin and sclerae, while highly elevated levels display brown.
Symptoms of jaundice include:
Yellow skin and sclerae
Paler than usual stools
Dark urine-a newborn’s urine should be colorless
Treatment for jaundice
Phototherapy is the most common treatment for reducing high bilirubinlevels that cause jaundice in anewborn. In the standard form of phototherapy, your baby lies in a bassinet or enclosed plastic crib (incubator) and is exposed to a type of fluorescent light that is absorbed by your baby’s skin.
As a newborn your baby must have looked plumpy and fair skinned.
After the treatment you can see your baby getting dark day by day..it is because of the UV rays that is been absorbed by the baby.. it is not permanent..But it will take time to return to its original colour..
