Home Remedies for Chickenpox

One disease that people dread is chicken pox. Dread because it is highly contagious… and could persist for up to two weeks.

Chicken pox is a viral infection (caused by the varicella zoster virus or human herpes virus 3) that mostly occurs in late winter or early spring. It is usually a mild, but miserable, illness common in children.

It causes itchy red spots or blisters all over the body… and is accompanied by flu-like symptoms such as dry cough, fever, headache, sore throat, fatigue, loss of appetite, etc., especially a couple of days prior to the appearance of itchy red rashes.
This disease can spread through air or contact with saliva, mucus, or fluid from blisters of the infected individual.

Pregnant women, newborn babies, and those with a poor immune system or sensitive skin are more susceptible to this disease.
The infected person is contagious from a day or two before the rashes appear, until the time when all the blisters have dried.

It usually takes 10-21 days for the symptoms to develop the symptoms after being exposed to the virus. The illness generally lasts for up to two weeks.
Once the chicken pox virus enters the body, it remains within the body permanently. Though it does not cause chicken pox again, still it may cause shingles in the later years.

Here are some useful home remedies for dealing with chicken pox.

Home Remedy 1
• Take a glass of water.
• Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda.
• Sponge the patient with this solution. It provides relief from itching and dries up the spots.
Alternatively, you can add half or 1 cup of baking soda in bath water and let the patient soak in it for a while. Oatmeal baths prepared by adding finely ground uncooked oatmeal in bath water are also soothing.

Home Remedy 2
• Take a handful of neem leaves.
• Crush them to make a paste.
• Apply it on the affected areas.
Moreover, you can add neem leaves in bath water.

Home Remedy 3
• Take 100g carrot and 60g coriander leaves.
• Chop them.
• Now, boil them in 500ml water until it reduces to half.
• Give this soup to the patient.

• During early stages of this disease, include figs in your diet.
• To reduce the appearance of scars, apply vitamin E oil on the affected areas when they start healing.
• As prevention is always the best cure, make sure you get your child vaccinated for chicken pox.
• Do not give aspirin or ibuprofen to the patient as it can lead to a potentially fatal condition known as Reye’s syndrome.
